What Is TMJ Disorder?

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a condition that occurs when the jaw joints become inflamed as a result of facial trauma or being overworked. This often causes intense pain throughout the jaw, head, and neck, as well as earaches, frequent headaches (or migraines), jaw popping and clicking, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and more.

A misaligned bite, stress, bruxism, and even autoimmune diseases can put you at a higher risk of developing TMD.

Occlusal Splints

An occlusal splint works to keep teeth from touching while also redistributing your bite force so that they no longer bear the force of grinding and clenching. We’ll take impressions of your mouth and craft a splint that is comfortable to wear, effectively stabilizing your jaw and reducing the pressure that is placed on the joints and muscles.

Equilibration/Occlusal Adjustments

When the bite is misaligned, causing pressure to be placed on the jaw joints and specific teeth, we will perform equilibration or an occlusal adjustment. This process involves slightly reshaping the chewing surfaces of teeth so that the bite comes together correctly without placing additional pressure on the jaw. With these minor adjustments, you will notice a difference in how your mouth feels day after day.
